while i'm on my motion graphics kick

here is a new blog i just stumbled across:

feed

her royal madgeness

i couldn't decide whether i liked the video for 'get together' or not, but it's starting to grow on me. i think it's a good solution for taking old footage and creating a new interpretation.

saul saul bass bass

i watched kiss kiss bang bang last night which has a really great opening sequence. it reads like something saul bass would do if he ever dabbled in motion graphics. it was produced by kyle cooper's company prologue based in malibu. very inspiring stuff. qt link is below.

[ kiss kiss bang bang title sequence ]

now can we please bring back creative title sequences like this one and the other work cooper has inspired over the years?

go away

i'm not sure why i like this so much, but i think there is just something really elegant and simple about it.

this is a new bus service that goes from somewhere to lax. as you can tell i haven't paid much attention to the commercials except for the type on the bus. the mta logo is very nice as well, too bad the logo does not reflect the service, or lack of i should say.

eggs are good for you

one of the most fascinating things about going to germany last year was the smart car. now it seems this little gem might be made in the us finally, 12 years after they appeared in europe. way to keep on top of things us of a.

the eggs

but is it a status symbol enough to even fly in the us? it is cooler than a metro by far. i can't imagine someone giving up their hummer for one, but maybe their self-conscious will get the best of them.

wrap it up

an interesting article on the topic of cd packaging from one of my favorite publications, southwest airlines spirit. always good for 2-3 minutes of quality reading on your next cheap flight.

click on the image to attempt to read it. sorry, my scanner is not doing so hot these days.

i'm sorry to tell you this

dear realty executives-

i just wanted to let you know that the year is 2006. i know, you are shocked, even amazed by this news. i know that you think it is still 1985 with your shield and your "trendy" type but the world has sadly moved on.

the apple brand has exploded (you might remember this apple-thing as the people making the lisa); this oddity of reality television has taken over our tv's, we watch people in hopes that their lives suck worse than ours; people are now famous for being well, nothing; white layered tube socks are no longer the rage, especially not when pulled over your tapered leg pants; likewise scrunchies and 'the dorothy hamill' have gone away although blue eyeshadow still is worn; and lastly a bit over half of the population (allegedly) elected a moron president, and if that isn't bad enough they re-elected him four years later (allegedly).

i know this is all shocking news and i feel badly for you to have to hear of it from my blog. but i just thought you might want to update your atrocity of a logo, you know give your image a little boost. if you need any help or professional counseling i would be more than happy to recommend some qualified graphic designers and therapists who might be able to help you through this difficult time.

hugs and kisses-

i can't read what you are saying

so i watched munich last night. overall it was a good movie but something about it just pushed me over the edge. so much so that i had to write a rant. here's hoping spielberg reads this email i sent on to universal...

i tried to enjoy your film munich, but couldn't due to a very common error. when producing a movie, please contact a reliable, informed graphic designer when producing subtitles. the subtitles in this film are horrible and impossible to read even on a 21" tv screen. i feel as though i missed 30-40% of the movie because i have no clue what the subtitles say. it's a shame that such a popular film with so much potential could be ruined by the erroneous choice of the studio and a lack for respect and integrity of the design profession. a serif, set light? please. any designer knows you can't read that on screen. if you give one ounce of credit to the design profession please make sure this mistake doesn't happen again. graphic designers exist for a reason you know. i feel sorry for the other people who have the entire movie subtitled and have absolutely no clue what's going on. embarrassing. completely embarrassing.

well, no one ever said that i sugar coat things. but really, who are the people creating the subtitles in movies? i have yet to see a movie where i said, 'those are really great subtitles'. most of the time they choose yellow or some other color that completely blends in. couldn't they put a couple hundred dollars in the film budget for some decent subtitles? then again i'm probably asking for too much. i should just show up at universal with a sign and picket their doors. quality typography for everyone!

sometimes image substitutions for letters drive me crazy
